As the Managing Director, Gary Batt is more than just an architect. With over 30 years of Architecture experience, 24 of them specialising in the dementia, elderly and retirement sectors. He has finely tuned his craft to become a recognised industry leader of Aged Care Architecture in Perth and Australia.

Starting his career with Loughton Patterson Architects. He spent 9 years exclusively developing his Retirement and Dementia Design skills. From there Gary established Gary Batt Architects (GBA) in 2003, with the vision of creating functional, cost effective, beautiful environments for the aged care industry that feel like home to a resident.

Perfected over many years and honed on hundreds of buildings, Gary’s ability to develop solutions that serve the priorities of the client as well as the building’s staff and residents is intuitive and continues to inspire the practice to this day.

The GBA approach is hands on with client consultation meetings combined with smart site specific design and practicality, delivering buildings that are results based, resident, staff and client focused, cost effective works of art.

Gary’s extensive knowledge, drive and commitment to continually improving standards in design for dementia, aged care and retirement is applied to his belief that each new project is an opportunity to improve the lives of people as they age.

For this reason he helps guide other architects, designers and builders on the best practice and solutions in designing for aged care, and has found himself one of the most sought after consultants in the industry.

Gary was a key author in a peer reviewed journal on Designing for Dementia:

Designing for Dementia: Making small spaces work. The Journal of Aging and Social Change 9 (3): 1-12. doi:10.18848/2576-5310/CGP/v09i03/1-12.

Extensive travel enables Gary to broaden his knowledge and to keep up to date with current and future trends in aged care and retirement living. He continually attends both national and international conferences such as the Eighth Ageing and Society Interdisciplinary Conference in Tokyo, Japan. Gary was also a finalist at the Ageing Asia Forum and Eldercare Innovation Awards for his outstanding project at Amaroo Buckley Caring Centre for the Best Silver Architecture Awards.
